Salty Dawg Marina: 1987, 1988, 1989
| As soon as Edward was certified, he started diving for a Marina where he was working in Manteo, North Carolina . The deal was, he got certified for free and dove for the Marina. Illegal? Probably. Dangerous? Undoubtedly. Stupid? Yes, but he was 16 and could care less. He survived and learned a few things so in retrospect he guesses it was a good experience. He certainly enjoyed most of it at the time. His first "commercial" dive was to untangle a crab pot from the propeller shaft of a sailboat in the middle of the Alligator River, close to the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. He was scared out of his mind but he did it. He did quite a few other odd underwater jobs for the Marina (all alone) and racked up about 10 to 15 dives of varying length. None of the dives were below 20 feet. He did this for three summers beginning in 1987.

Mexico: Summer 1989
This was in Cozemel. Edward went with a friend's family and did some really fantastic diving. He remembers diving on about three days, with two dives each day. Most were drift dives over reefs, but he remembers one in particular as being pretty deep, about 75 feet. Highlights I remember were a moray eel, a nurse shark, and unlimited visability. These were really fantastic dives.

Wrightsville Beach, NC: Winter 1989 - Spring 1996
This was a short dive off the coast of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Edward went with some marine biologists who were hunting specimens. He mostly hung out and enjoyed being underwater in the winter. He also remembers being late for a history exam because of this dive. Edward went on a few more dives while he was in Wilmington but has no idea how many. Maybe 5? Maybe 10? He seems to recall diving near Carolina Beach while he was lifeguarding there, as well. Who knows. Nothing stands out as particularly interesting. Bad vis and cold water, mostly.
